Beautifully written, from start to finish. Powerful. And I never knew any of this about President Johnson. If our new leaders have never experienced poverty, how can they be moved to fix it? That is the challenge of our time.

And I've actually been to Cotulla, stayed there on my way to Mexico. It's just as Tim Barnicle says.

Thank you Tim for this inspiring reminiscence of LBJ’s example for today’s lost Democratic Party woefully in need of bread crumbs to show the way of LBJ.

Thank you Tim I loved learning about LBJ, such a beautiful essay. And I agree that the democrats have lost that home spun presentation. Another nail in the coffin I believe was when the democratic party and Bill Clinton inaugurated neoliberalism. Moving to the right killed the message LBJ brought into the social fabric of society. However, I also agree with Dan Rather’s assessment that the right wing has owned the media with their 40 year project. People just say they hate the democrats because that’s what they are being told by social media, newspapers and radio. The democrats never adjusted to the reality of what was occurring. How to catch up is a mystery. Yet I hope some billionaires are willing to engage.

You are now part of my new community which I am building around me of like minded individuals . Unofficial as it may be, it’s an ideal . In my dream community you would be a spokesperson and historian . Thanks for edifying me on LBJ . I was around 5 years old when he took over for the late JFK and I never new this about him . Puts things in a different perspective for me .

Learned a lot about Lyndon Johnson. If what you say is true, that the democrats aren’t talking about the right things, ie poverty, etc. how is it that people are voting for someone like trump who has absolutely no plans of lifting poverty or making their lives better?

Tim,

What a delight to be “introduced” to you! Of all the articles I’ve read since the election (looking for a glimmer of a North Star for Democrats), yours shines a light on a path that feels genuine and meaningful. Thank you

Reflection on the history of our country, and the study of its pioneers may well be the thing we all don’t even know we desperately need.

I’m looking forward to learning more about how and what you think!

I was surprised never to hear that Harris had ever said that Trump's MAGAs blocked raising the minimum wage to $15. That seemed like a powerful argument against Trump, but it was ignored by the Democrats.

I thoroughly enjoyed your article and learning about this history. It shed some light during these darker times and we absolutely need more people like LBJ.

Excellent article (and not to be a nudge, but Duluth is over 150 miles from the Canadian border—quite a bit of literary license there). Def agree your main premise. Good stuff.

Wow Tim... I have to tell you my first impression from reading this article, the first by you so far, that I very much admire your style. I do so hope to read more from your mind in the future if I may and perhaps if allowed, to engage with your other readers in constructive, positive ways. History is one of many interests I have. Thanks to you, I now know way more than I did about LBJ and I thank you for that as well. Bravo Tim !

*BTW - I peaked in at the recommendation of Steve, at "The Warning" I receive his letter regularly and get to read what's allowed if one doesn't pay a subscription. I love his work and would pay if I could. Please take no offense should I not be able to subscribe. Best wishes...

Thank you for a brilliant article, Tim. Yes, the Democrats have lost their way with a magnitude of our voting population. Do they not realize the number of our citizens, whose noses are to the grindstone every day, just to afford the ability to eat, have a roof over their head, a vehicle that will get them to work? We have fallen backwards as a nation. It's time to get back to basics, as in LBJ's beginnings. Thank you, Tim........I will look forward to reading more of your writings! Thanks, Steve!
