The Democratic Party chose to become America’s H.R. department...necessary, we supposed, but annoying... Excellent description. If only we could turn back time. Great article.

Democrats believe in the vote, and Republicans do not. So, that is the difference. American politics has always been about choosing the "lesser of two evils". Unfortunately, the R's are hyper-organized and the D's are like herding cats. Watching for new leaders here...

You certainly are a great writer, but I’m not sure about your logic here. My mom died of Covid one week before she was scheduled to be vaccinated. I am particularly sensitive about how that president completely mishandled the crisis and the Republican Party was complicit in that mishandling.

Regarding the rest of your post, I frankly get tired of those who refer to the elites as anyone with a college degree. I grew up in a trailer house but I went to college, got an advanced degree, and somehow that makes me an elite. Do I listen to that moron Joe Rogan? Hell no I do not. Just like I did not listen to Rush Limbaugh. I’m not saying that Democrats haven’t done some things wrong, but they’ve done far more things right. Democracy really does die in dumbness, as a journalist recently wrote. Let’s stop acting like we don’t have a serious case of stupidity in this country.

As shared breath among lovers, we must remember to be respectful of one another’s boundaries.

Clearly these are being redefined. Each generation struggles to find its own way, ours is no exception.

The media competes for our attention and reshapes how we spend our time.

We must resist the urge to react, and find ways of developing new strategies for coping with the intolerable.

This is the challenge that we face today. Will we arise to defeat the monsters we have created by our inattention?

I’m a 76 year old survivor of a challenging life who faces each day with resolve and resilience.

The cries we don’t acknowledge are the ones that need to most attention!

Great framing of the history of our current crisis , as always . As one of those old men shaking his cane, I wonder why the Democratic Party isn’t expanding its effort to protect and renew the Constitutional sacredness of the Vote, which is now the victim of billions of paper cuts at the handful of a few rich oligarchs who pour their money into ad campaigns, direct political donations and Recreation Vehicles for Supreme Court judges . I’d suggest :

1 A corporation should not be considered to have the same freedom of expression as an individual ,

REVERSE CITIZENS UNITED

( otherwise the bots will be standing in line on Election Day with us -they don’t need water on a hot day either!)

2 Congress designate set amount of money for donations (TBD) and designate limited ad time, provided by the government ( controlled by “ We the People”) for use

on our air channels in their campaigns

ESTABLISH A FCC WITH ETHICS

3 Elected officials should be banned from accepting any human-citizen contributions larger than the poverty line (or some other designated income gage). Instead try convincing the voters at your town hall meetings !

AND elected officials should put all their financial savings in a blind trust until leaving office

STRENGTHEN, NOT SHRED , THE OIG

4. A Congressional committee should be designated to propose ways to preserve the vote and strengthen access to it (perhaps changing the length of terms OR call a new election every time a political candidate poll remains below 20% for 3 months ?). Of course, these Congressional representatives would have to full disclose their financial backers, as I don’t imagine the other changes can happen immediately.

I’m sure there are at least 10 honest and righteous representatives in Washington DC who would stand up for these changes; even if God could only find Abraham and Lot in his search through Sodom and Gomorrah

Best Regards and prayers to us all and to this nation !
